The Garden Tomb Experience
History and Ongoing Research
The Garden Tomb is believed by many to be the garden and sepulchre of Joseph of
Arimathea, and therefore a possible site of the resurrection of Jesus. The Garden is owned
and administered by The Garden Tomb ( Jerusalem) Association, a Charitable Trust based
in the United Kingdom.  @3 do not charge for admission to the Garden.  It is maintained by
the voluntary contributions of visitors.

Archaeologists suggest that the Garden Tomb may have been cut in the first century AD, the
period when Christ ministered on earth.  The tomb was unearthed in 1867.  Unfortunately its
entrance had been damaged, possibly by an earthquake and later repaired with stone blocks

In later years the tomb was probably used for Christian worship in both the Byzantine and
Crusader periods.  There are indications of a Church structure, a possible baptistery and two
crosses, one of whick is inside the tomb.
There came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who had himself
become a disciple of Jesus.  Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus' body and
Pilate ordered that it be given to him.  Joseph took the body, wrapped it in
a clean linen cloth and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out
of the rock.

Matthew 27:57-59 (NIV)
